George Washington declared the first Thanksgiving Day Celebration in Nov of 1789, but it was Abraham Lincoln who created a standing national holiday in 1863 amidst a Civil War “…to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”
